Health & Wellness | Healthy Living Choices | Nutrition Program

The Public Health Nutrition program works toward making healthy choice the easy choice for all residents. It is about reducing barriers and increasing opportunities for healthy eating habits. We promote and support an overall healthy lifestyle that includes healthy nutritious food.

Public Health Nutrition uses a population health promotion approach rather than an individual approach. That includes advocating for and building healthy public policy, helping to create supportive environments, and assisting communities and agencies build the capacity to take charge of their nutritional health.

The Public Health Nutritionist is responsible for a number of initiatives, including:

  • Collaborating with other Saskatchewan Public Health Nutritionists to develop programs and resources such as a distance education “Self-study Course for Nutrition Coordinators” and health columns for local newspapers.
  • Maintaining a library of reach & teach kits, videos, books, lesson plans and other nutrition resources available for schools to borrow free-of-charge. Resources match nutrition units in the health curriculum.
  • Consulting with Kids in the Kitchen program coordinators in the health region - after-school cooking program for children in grade 5, 6, or 7.

The Public Health Nutritionist is also involved with - the Baby Friendly Initiative to help provide infants a healthy start in life; Food Security Groups striving to make healthy foods affordable and available for everyone; School Divisions and Schools to promote a healthy environment for our children; and with groups using a holistic approach to building healthy communities.
