Saskatchewan Health Authority (former Heartland Health Region) provides a
minimum of two Medical First Responder (MFR) Courses each year.
The role of the
MFR is to work with ambulance services to provide emergency
care. They ensure the EMS system has been activated, gain safe access to
the patient, assess the patient’s condition and provide emergency
treatment until the ambulance arrives. In rural Saskatchewan MFRs reduce the time that patients wait for initial care in the
The MFR course consists of 40 hours of
classroom instruction that includes CPR, AED training, lectures and
hands-on practical training using medical equipment. The training
modules covered include anatomy, patient assessment, oxygen therapy, and
medical and trauma emergencies to name a few.

Saskatchewan Health, and will receive an orientation to the program.
MFRs may also receive a fully stocked first responder kit
if required, some areas have multiple MFRs or shared kits.Once
registered and orientated, MFRs must complete ongoing
continuing education to keep their license. All MFR continuing education is provided free of charge across the region. MFRs have mandatory education they must complete to get
relicensed in their two year registration term. We also offer additional
education to further our MFRs knowledge.

Applications are accepted year round and are kept on file for
upcoming courses. Applicants are required to complete and submit an
application & criminal record check. Applications & criminal
record checks can be submitted to Jim Cheyne. Approved applicants will
be contacted. The MFR course is free of charge to approved
applicants, and no prior training is required.
